Application Overview

DTMaps is an interactive object location application especially designed for mobile devices  DTMaps is new in the fact that shortens the path to the information, often 'lost' in a globalized information schema.
DTMaps provides answers to some basic questions like:
  • Who are the plumbers closest to my house?
  • What are the appartments to rent in my area?
  • Which are the available parking places in my destination?
Only the essential information, is presented in a clear manner and in a quantity that can be quickly exploited by the user.
With DTMaps you will need to adopt a natural procedure that places YOUR presence and points of interests in the middle:
  • Indicate  to the system where you are
or where you want to go.
  • Select a Group of Interest
  • Select a Query within your group of interest.
DTMaps is absolutely free to use without any prior registration. Nevertheless, the user using the DTMaps application explicitly agrees with the product Terms & Conditions.

Adapt DTMaps To Your Device

The Map interface is flexible enough to adapt to your device screen and let you get pleasure using DTMaps:
  • Landscape
Use this display mode if it is supported by your device. In most cases you get a larger screen surface.
  • Zoom = 100%
Do not let your device or browser application select the zoom level in order to fill the screen. It is much better if you select the screen size that fits exactly your screen.
  • Presets, Edit, Map Size, Custom
Use this option to adapt the width and height that fits better your screen. Here is an example:
We have a Sony Ericsson W950i device with screen landscape dimensions (5.10cm - 3.80cm) our best configuration was 300 pixels width and 190 pixels height. With these dimensions, we have a clear 100% zoom and the results dropdown at the bottom of the screen. Do not forget to press Save Settings before going back to the main map page.
We'll be testing DTMaps with more and more devices as they become available and we'll enrich the Map Size list. Please visit the Step-By-Step configuration instructions that will be updated regularly.

Presets. Usual Areas Of Interest

Like Bookmarks in browsers, Presets in DTMaps are references to Areas Of Interest that we visit often: like the area around home, the area around the work etc..

DTMaps allows you to Save map characteristics under a name in the Presets directory.

Here is the procedure for creating a Preset entry:

  • Create your Area Of Interest
  • Press the Save button
  • Enter the Preset name
  • Press on Create Preset
  • Press on Done

The Preset name will show under the Preset dropdown menu:

Once a Preset is saved, you can recall it at any time. DTMaps will get you immediately there.

If you give a Preset the name default it will be used as the map to display when you launch DTMaps.

Remember! Presets replace a repeated configuration of addresses on the map often used.

MyLocations. Personal Locations References
DTMaps will allow you to create a serie of personal geographical references under the name of Locations and display them on the map whenever needed.
Here is a practical usage of the Locations feature.
Let us say you are new in the town of Geneva, Switzerland and you have been proposed three appartments. While exploring the town you want to reference these locations so you can evaluate distances.
  1. You create the preset: Geneva pointing to the address: Geneva, Switzerland
  2. You create the preset Work pointing to your new work address: route de la Capite 91, Cologny (zoom level 12)
with these two Presets defined you will be creating the three locations for the appartments:

Enter the address of the first appartment:
2, rue du roveray, Geneva,
- Press Save
- Enter the name app1
- Press Create Location
- Press Done

Enter the address of the second appartment:
2, rue toepfer, Geneva,
- Press Save
- Enter the name app2
- Press Create Location
- Press Done

Enter the address of the third appartment:
24, chemin rieu, geneva,
- Press Save

- Press Create Location
- Press Done

Now that you saved these locations do the following:
  1. Under the Presets dropdown, select: Geneva
    and press Go.
  2. Under the Search Categories dropdown, select MyLocations
    and press Go.

You will be able to see the three appartment locations displayed on the card:

In the Item dropdown menu you will be able to see the list of the object and their distance from the center of the map !

If you select one of the items and press Go, you will see a map with the item selected in the middle.

MyObjects. Items Of Personal Interest
You can isolate objects of the DTmaps database, provide them with your own alias and follow them individually under the MyObjects category.
Usually, applied to Locator objects, your should first find the object you want to followi: either by querying the database or by searching the object individually in the GoTo Address field.
Here is an example of a MyObject item:
  1. In the Goto Address we enter

The $ sign is followed by the item id
  2. DTMaps will isolate the item

We should only press the Save button
  3. Enter the alias for the object: Alan's Parking
and press the Create Object button.

  4. Press the Done button to save the Settings.
In real-life, these objects could be Locator objects for persons of your family: kids, vehicles, domestic animals etc..
... Or this can be your own locator device that will indicate you current location.
  1. Under the Presets dropdown, select: Geneva
    and press Go.
  2. Under the Search Categories dropdown,
    select MyObjects

DTLink WDS - Introduction
The environment is undergoing major changes at a global scale, and many dramatic climatic accidents have recently drawn a lot of attention on ecology and environmental monitoring. However, in applications like the wildfire detection, the current lack of appropriate observations prevents firefighters or environmental researchers from addressing crucial questions and taking immediate decisions.
DTLink WDS is a new generation of wildfire detection system based on a wireless sensor network with built-in capacity to produce high temporal and spatial density measures. By gathering the most recent results from a large range of research domains, we aim at providing the fundamental tools that will help in preventing and early fighting of wildfires.
Until now, there have been only limited field campaigns with in-situ spatial observations. These campaigns have generally focused on deploying relatively few "expensive" sensing stations limiting the spatial coverage. The high cost of such systems makes it difficult for scientists to deploy a large number of sensing units. Furthermore, such instruments commonly use data loggers attached to the sensing devices to store their data. Such a storing technique suffers from limited capacity and does not allow the user to get an immediate feedback from the system. Indeed, one must physically go to each monitoring station in order to download their data. As a result, using or monitoring such a system can quickly become time consuming and tedious.
In DTLink we address these issues by developing a large-scale distributed environmental measurement system centered on a wireless sensor network with a built-in capacity to produce high temporal and spatial density measures. This innovative system is composed of multiple battery and solar-powered sensing stations which communicate wirelessly, constituting a sensor network. The design of the sensing stations was conceived with the following baseline requirements: low energy consumption, long communication range, low cost, simple installation, long energy autonomy, high-quality data, water resistance and the prospect of retrieving data in real-time.
These sensing stations periodically sample their sensors and transmit their readings through the wireless network to a collection point (base-station or gateway). The base-station forwards this data to the DTMaps applicaion and makes it available to the user in real time. DTLink WDS allows environmental scientists to use a comprehensive portal to survey, analyze and control the measurement process through a web-based interface. In addition, it is also possible to easily add/remove sensing stations, change the set of sensors of any particular sensing stations, or change the geographic location of the measurement points.
DTLink WDS provides low cost, wireless and reliable sensor network systems for wildfire detection. It improves present data collection techniques with the latest technology, while meeting the requirements from environmental scientists.

System Overview
  • Monitoring and Recording Sensor Measurements.
The system gathers measurements from different type of sensors that are forwarded to the centralized applications DTMaps through the base-station or gateway device. There is no need to manage any of the field devices. The devices are configured to send all data to the centralized application.
  • Notification & Alerting
Individual sensor values can be set up to trigger by threshold or level, and alert unacceptable and out of range conditions via email or SMS messages.
  • Network Scalability
Expanding the network is as simple as adding on another DTLink WDS node, as each node has the ability to forward messages from other units that are within communication range, with typical range from 100 to 500 meters depending or placement, obstacales and radio interference. A single DTLink WDS network can support up to 100 nodes.
  • Battery Operated Devices
DTLink WDS are opimized for using conventional batteries that will ensure proper function of the nodes for decades. Solar-powered will be only the base-station/gateway device.
  • Web-based Software Interface (DTMaps)
DTMapsoffers a familiar and easy to use a web browser based interface for the sensor network data management and visualization. - Google maps support - Unlimited number of nodes - Multiple DTLink WDS networks - Individual node data - Chart & Data Export support - Alerts & Notifications
Back To Top..

How It Works
The fire sensors are part of the mesh network running the tinyOS incorporating an advanced mesh technology. The network nodes extend the radio coverage by hopping messages. All nodes can send data and also forward data to other nodes or the gateway device. Each network node monitors the traffic in its neighborhood and keeps track of possible alternate radio paths. If one path is blocked or degrades it will switch to an alternate path. The gateway device (base station) forwards data from the sensor network to the DTMaps application. The DTMaps application allows users to view remotely sensor data via the internet. The gateway can connect to any standard Ethernet hub or router or incorporate a GPRS modem and forward the info through the GSM network.

Gateway-Device Setup
This section will step you through the process of setting up and configuring the gateway device (GSM version). This version of the gateway device will use the GSM network to transmit the sensor data to the DTMaps application. For this, you will need to subscribe to a GSM NETWORK and get the small electronic card (SIM) that is used for the mobile phone. Before you insert it into the gateway device you should use a phone to test proper function and disable the PIN input.
  1. Remove the gateway device from its packaging.
  2. Open/Unscrew the box carefully.
  3. Place the SIM card in its placeholder on the device and close it firmly.
  4. Close the gateway box and place it in an area where you have a goodGSMconnection.
  5. Connect the device to a power outlet and wait for about 6 minutes. The gateway should connect to the GSM network and be ready to send and receive information.
  6.  Before you go on, you should note the phone number of the SIM card installed in the gateway device.
  7. From any mobile phone, you should send the following SMS message to the gateway device number:

    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SENDSTATUSSMS
    ARGS:<phone_number>2
    END

Within several minutes you should get an answer SMS from the gateway device. You are done ! The device can be configured further !

GPRS Configuration

The GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is used to connect the GSM networks to the Internet. DTLinkWDSis using this service to update theDTMaps application. Here below is the step-by-step procedure to configure your gateway device.

  1. Get your GSM provider GPRS parameters: (see Appendix A. Network GPRS Settings). If your provider is not listed, you should contact your GSM provider directly.
  2. From any mobile phone, you should send the following SMS message to the gateway
    device number:

    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SETGPRSCONF
    ARGS:;bearer_type=gprs;access_point=<GPRS APN>;dns=<DNS>;username=<
    Username>;password=<Password>;timeout=3600
    END

    Example: Orange suisse
    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SETGPRSCONF
    ARGS:;bearer_type=gprs;access_point=internet;dns=213.055.128.001;timeout=36
    00
    END

Detailed below are the GPRS settings for various worldwide networks. You should note that we cannot guarantee the correctness or validity of the GPRS settings published below and therefore cannot guarantee that the GPRS settings below will work with your Nokia phone. It is also worth noting that many network require GPRS services to be activated on a phone account beforeGPRS services can be accessed via a mobile phone, therefore you should check with your network service provider to make sure that you have GPRS activated on your phone account before attempting to change GPRS settings on your phone. If your GSM provider is not listed you should contact your provider support. Worldwide Network GPRS Settings

Network Functionality Test
During this phase, you will be testing the functionality of the system before you deploy the devices at the operation field. You can place the devices close together on a table, connect them at the power outlet and ensure good GSM coverage.

Please wait approx. 5-6 minutes before you perform the tasks that follow.

  1. Configuration Of The Initial SMS alert.
During this procedure you will configure the initialSMS alert in case of a fire that will be sent directly from the gateway device. Additional alerts can be configured from within the DTMaps application

Send the following SMS to the gateway devices from any mobile phone:
    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SETALARM_SMS_NUMBER
    ARGS:<phone #>
    END

Where <phone,#> should be replaced with a valid GSM number that will receive the fire
    alert.

    Here is an example:
    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SETALARM_SMS_NUMBER
    ARGS:+41739826746
    END

The gateway is now configured to send the initial SMS alert to the number you just
configured. The system will not send any confirmation back.
You can set one and only initial SMS alert per network sent directly from the gateway
device. You can configure additional customized alert messages through the DTMaps interface.
A new SMS message with a different phone will instruct the system to send messages to the new mobile phone number.
  2. Configuration Of Heat Detector Alert Level.
If your configuration includes Heat Detectors you will need to configure the alert message level. The system will continuously observe the temperature level. When the temperature goes beyond the level you have configured the system will immediately send an alert message.
Send the following SMS to the gateway devices from any mobile phone:
    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SETALARM_TEMP_LEVEL
    ARGS:<CDEGREES>
    END

Where <CDEGREES> should be replaced with a valid Celcius temperature
    Here is an example:
    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:SETALARM_TEMP_LEVEL
    ARGS:60
    END
  3. Testing The ’Possible’ Fire Alert
You can test the fire alert with a lighter flame in front of the UV flame detector for approx. 10 seconds. The system will send within seconds the following SMS message to the mobile phone number you configured previously.

Possible fire at node <node network id>
    Detected <number of seconds>s ago.

Where <node network id> is the unique id as assigned to the device and <number of seconds> the time it took the node to communicate the informaion to the gateway device.
  4. Testing The Fire Alert
You can test the fire alert with a lighter flame in front of the UV flame detector for approx. 20 seconds. The system will send within seconds the following
SMS message to the mobile phone number you configured previously.

Large fire at node <node network id> Detected <number of seconds>s ago.

Where <node network id> is the unique id as assigned to the device and <number of seconds> the time it took the node to communicate the informaion to the gateway device.
  5. Create Your Personal Account In DTMaps
  6. Create A UV Flame Detector Entry
    - Enter the DTMaps system again and login using your User Name and password you just created.
    - Click on the Fire Detection option
    - Click on the Fire Detection Areas option
    - Click on the Add option
    - Type in a name for the Fire Detection Area and click on Submit

    Private Object? Select YES.
GMT Local Time. The GMT time coordinates of the operation field.
    - Click on the Submit button to register the device.
    - Repeat the operation for all available devices you may have.
  7. Update the DTMaps Connection Frequency
The gateway device is configured to send sensor data to the DTMaps application every 24 hours. This frequency can be changed down to the minute (60 seconds) or any value higher. For our network testing we’ll modify the frequency to two minutes (120 secs). Once the network test has been passed, you should modify the frequency to the value you wish (recommended value: 86400 secs or every 24 hours).
Send the following SMS to the gateway devices from any mobile phone:
    OTAP_TINYNODE
    PWD:tc
    COMMAND:BUFFER_FLUSH_PERIOD
    ARGS:120
    END
Where 120 is the frequency period in secs. From now on the gateway will update the DTMaps system, every 2 minutes.

Locator GPS Objects
In addition to static objects like the flame detectors, you can get the actual position of moving objects like: fire buses, ambulances etc.. or get the actual position of fire men or other personnel fighting the fire. You can do this by equiping the vehicles or the persons with the SANAV MT-101 or MT-102 or CT-58 or GC-101 or GX-101 devices. The configuration procedure will be the same with any of the above devices.
  1. Read carefully the device’s user manual.
  2. Place the GSM SIM card into the device and note carefully the phone number of the
    device.
  3. Get yourGSMprovider GPRS settings (see: 9 Appendix A. Network GPRS Settings)
or call directly your provider’s support.

Flame Detectors Deployment
The sensors are spatially distributed at a density of 150-200m following basic rules:
  1. A flame detector can communicate with other nodes within a distance of 200-500 meters and detect a flame of one square meter within a distace of 200 meters. (view reference)
  2. A Gateway device can server 100 node devices. There is no limit to the number of adjacent networks. There is no limit to the number of devices/networks that can be managed by the DTMaps application.
  3. It is not necessary for a node, to ’view’ the gateway directly. A maximum of 10 ’hops’ can be used to connect a node to a gateway device.

Following these simple deployment rules, you will be able to adapt the WDS system to any topology.

Multiple Access Support
Access to the your DTMaps objects can be filtered in many ways without introducing a complicated user management system:
  1. Public or Private Objects
When creating you can declare it as Public or Private

A Public object can be seen by any user having access to DTMaps.com.
When accessing public objects the user cannot view the Sensors Tab containing the sensors' values.
  2. ReadOnly Users
In your account settings you can provide a Readonly password

Trusted users can login using the ReadOnly password and have access to all objects' data at ReadOnly mode.
  3. Update Users
In your account settings you can provide an Update password

Trusted users can login using the Update password and have access to all objects' data. Users with the update password can modify/delete any object.
